 MIDWEEK FORECAST

Issued every Thursday. See our weekly forecast  here for the more comprehensive week ahead forecast issued every Saturday.

Weekend outlook

High pressure slowly building in from the southwest through the weekend as a showery westerly airflow retreats northwards.  Rain and cloud persisting across the Highlands into next week but turning warm  and dry with light winds in the south.

Overnight, a frontal system will bring further  rain and low cloud  in from the northwest down across Scotland, N Ireland and N England but rain tending to then quickly die out as it moves away southeastwards on Saturday 20th – so probably little more than some thicker cloud for Wales on Saturday morning whilst the SW should remain reasonably fine and dry but a lot of cloud around overall today so quite cool in places.  Brightening up for a time across northern parts before the next area of rain moves into the Western Isles overnight.

Sunday 21st the Summer Solstice - sees further rain moving eastwards across Scotland, perhaps extending for a time across N Ireland and into Cumbria and the N Pennines.  Further south the high pressure now starting to dominate and it looks like being a  fine dry day for most parts, though probably still on the fairly cloudy side and with temperatures only perhaps a little above average for most though the sunniest parts of the south & SE may see 23C.

Monday through the rest of the week.

By Monday 22nd all parts from the south of Scotland southwards will be under high pressure and temperatures will begin rising, especially across Wales and the SW.  Long sunny periods for most areas and feeling warm, some sea breezes setting in around coasts. Still probably a bit cloudy though across the centre and north of Scotland-the Highlands still under a showery airflow from the west and with a likelihood of lower cloud and some showers pushing eastwards through the day, chiefly across Highlands northwards.

On Tuesday 23rd the high pressure should finally extend north to N Scotland as it drifts northeastwards, allowing more of an easterly breeze down across the far south and keeping east coasts a little chilly.  Through the week high pressure likely to remain over the British Isles and temperatures pushing into the mid twenties especially across Wales and the inland SW.  Local sea breezes by day though and some eastern coasts and hills – such as the North York Moors - likely to see more in the way of cloud though, with the west & central areas generally doing best for the sun.  A risk also through the week of some thundery showers developing in places by afternoon, especially on high ground.
